VRROOM: TV keeps showing “unsupported audio format”

A banner that reads “unsupported audio format” appearing on the TV — often only while playing Dolby Atmos content — with an HDfury VRROOM in the chain. The fix takes one setting.

Fix it step by step

  1. Open the VRROOM web server in a browser (the IP address is on the unit’s OLED).
  2. Go to the CONFIG section.
  3. Set MUTE TX0 AUDIO to ON (or MUTE TX1 if the affected TV is on the TX1 output). The same setting exists in the OLED menu as [Mute TX0 Audio] / [Mute TX1 Audio].
  4. Play the Atmos content again — the banner should be gone, and your AVR or soundbar still receives the full signal from the dedicated audio output.

Why this happens

Per the manual, some TVs react badly when an Atmos bitstream reaches their input — most likely the Atmos MAT metadata they cannot parse. Verified affected models include the Sony XF9005/X900F and Samsung UN75NU6950. Since your audio should come from the sound system connected to VRROOM’s HDMI audio or eARC output anyway, the TV doesn’t need any audio at all: muting the video output’s audio removes the trigger without losing anything.

The manual’s broader advice: anyone with a strange issue that appears only when playing Atmos should try this mute first. The same setting also fixes TVs whose brightness fluctuates on Atmos content, and it is step one against audio echo.

Using TV ARC instead of a separate sound system? Set the TV’s audio output to Bitstream/Dolby Digital unless your sound system supports eARC or multichannel PCM.

Do you need a VRROOM for this?

Yes, if…

  • your TV can’t handle the formats your sources send and you want full audio on a separate output while the TV gets clean video — that is exactly what VRROOM is for

No, if…

  • you see this banner without an HDfury device: then it is a source-to-TV settings issue — set the source’s audio output to a format your TV supports, no new hardware needed
