Projectors without Dolby Vision (and how to set up the VRROOM fix)

Almost no dedicated home-theater projector supports Dolby Vision natively — that is the rule, not the exception. Below: exactly how to set up the VRROOM’s LLDV enabler so those projectors get Dolby-Vision–quality tone mapping anyway, plus a checked list of 55 popular current and recent projectors that support HDR10 (some also HDR10+) but not Dolby Vision, each sourced to the projector manufacturer’s own spec page, with its own dedicated setup page.

Every model below is sourced to the projector manufacturer’s own official spec page, spec sheet or manual — no third-party reviews or forums, only the brand’s own site, and each model also has its own dedicated setup page (linked from its name below). A few JVC and Sony models are sourced to their UK/EU/helpguide pages because the exact equivalent US page could not be loaded — same manufacturer, different regional site. This list favours accuracy over length: several projectors often assumed to lack Dolby Vision (recent lifestyle ultra-short-throw models from Hisense, AWOL Vision, most current XGIMI models and Optoma’s flagship laser line) turned out to support it and are deliberately left off, along with a couple of models we could not confirm on an official page without falling back to a review site. If your exact model is not listed, check its own official spec sheet for “Dolby Vision” — if it is absent and HDR10 is present, the same trick below applies.

How to set up LLDV on your projector

The trick has three parts, and only the middle one happens on the VRROOM: your source player does the actual Dolby Vision tone mapping, the VRROOM tells the player it’s allowed to do that, and your projector never has to do anything different at all — it just receives what looks like an ordinary HDR10 signal.

1. On your player: nothing special, just enable Dolby Vision

Apple TV 4K, an Oppo or Panasonic Blu-ray player, a Kaleidescape, an NVIDIA Shield and others already know how to output Dolby Vision — they just need to see a display that claims Dolby Vision support in its EDID before they’ll do it (that claim is the VRROOM’s job, step 2 below). Exact per-player menu steps, including the Apple TV 4K’s Match Range setting and the Oppo’s Player-led HDR mode, are in the player setup guides.

2. On the VRROOM: give the player a Dolby Vision EDID

Open the VRROOM’s web server and go to the EDID tab. Two ways to do it, easiest first:

  • Quick way: assign Custom EDID 5 (Sony A1 LLDV, DCI-P3 primaries) or Custom EDID 10 (Sony A1 LLDV, BT.2020 primaries) to the input your player is connected to. Both are ready-made LLDV EDIDs from the VRROOM’s own list of 100 — nothing else to configure.
  • More control: use Copy TX Sink EDID and Modify and set DV to Custom DV, then build your own datablock in the DV tab (primaries, backlight, Max/Min Luminance).

Then, in the HDR/AVI tab, turn on “Use custom HDR for TX0 and TX1 when input is LLDV” so the VRROOM automatically switches your projector’s HDR mode on whenever the incoming signal is LLDV. Restart your player after changing the EDID — most players (the Apple TV 4K especially) re-run their Dolby Vision compatibility test whenever the EDID changes. 3. On your projector: usually nothing at all

Your projector only ever sees an HDR10 signal and displays it as HDR10 — there is no Dolby Vision setting to find, because none is involved on that end. Leave it in whatever picture/HDR mode you’d normally use for HDR10 content. If your projector has its own dynamic, frame-by-frame HDR tone-mapping feature (JVC’s Frame Adapt HDR and Theater Optimizer are the best-known example), most owners get a cleaner result leaving that off and using a static HDR10 picture mode instead — the player already did scene-by-scene tone mapping before the signal ever reached the projector, so a second round on top of that can over- or under-correct. Check your projector’s own manual for exactly how that feature is toggled, since the menu wording changes between firmware versions.

On projectors without automatic HDR-mode switching you may need to force HDR mode manually, since LLDV does not always carry the same HDR info-frame as standard HDR10 — check your projector’s picture mode menu if the image stays in SDR after enabling LLDV.

JVC (D-ILA)

JVC’s entire D-ILA line, from the lamp-based NX/NP/X models to the flagship NZ and RS laser projectors, supports HDR10 (and mostly HDR10+) but not Dolby Vision — this is the single most common projector brand in VRROOM/LLDV discussions.

Sony (VPL projectors)

Sony’s home-theater projectors are HDR10/HLG-only — no HDR10+, no Dolby Vision, across the current VPL-XW line.

Epson

Epson’s LS/Pro Cinema laser line and its older UB reference projectors are HDR10(+) without Dolby Vision.

BenQ

BenQ projectors confirmed HDR10/HLG-only, no Dolby Vision.

Optoma

Optoma’s mainstream DLP and UHZ laser line is HDR10/HLG-only. Its newest flagship laser models — UHZ68 and UHZ78LV — do support Dolby Vision and are deliberately left off this list.

Samsung

Smart UST/lifestyle laser projectors

This is the one category where “no Dolby Vision” can no longer be assumed: newer Google TV–based ultra-short-throw and portable laser models increasingly ship with Dolby Vision decoding built into their smart OS. The models below still lack it and were individually verified; models such as the Hisense PX3-Pro, AWOL Vision LTV-3500 Pro, XGIMI Horizon Ultra, XGIMI Horizon 20 Max and Anker Nebula Cosmos 4K SE now support Dolby Vision and are deliberately excluded.
